Can the financial community in Asia rise to the challenges of regional integration?

Recent market and regulatory changes in the banking industry have accentuated the need for bankers to seize opportunities and weather challenges.

Never in the history of modern banking and finance has there been so much flux at so many levels—financial regulatory reforms, market structure reorientation and infrastructure integration, technological innovation as well as a fundamental shift in socio-economic-political centres of gravity from west to east.

There is increasing need for the banking and financial services industry to come together as a community to face the challenges and opportunities that the myriad of recent changes have brought. The financial community in Asia has demonstrated, through various crises, in the 1990s and more recently, that it can respond with a clear sense of energy and focus to capitalise on these momentous shifts and play an active role in contributing to and facilitating development of the regulatory landscape and financial market infrastructure in the region.

As a lead-up to the Asian Banker Summit 2013, we spoke to a number of speakers and panellists to get their views on key topics for the event.

Key trends in economic and trade flow

“Basel III is increasing banks’ focus on risk and liquidity management. With that, one of the key questions is: With whom am I putting my liquidity? So there is still a flight to quality to stable and reliable partners.

Yields in most markets are low, so banks that traditionally based their business models heavily on net interest income (NII) and cross- subsidised their fee business will have to reassess their business models.

With China’s economic rise, the renminbi (Rmb) is growing in importance. However, comparing the share of China’s GDP to global GDP, the use of Rmb is still under-represented and the gap to USD and EUR still remains significant.”
